As if 2021 hasn’t been wild enough already. According to BBC, there are “Fake” Amazon workers defending the company on Twitter. Wow, this year is weird already. Votes are in the process of being counted in Alabama. The votes will decide whether Amazon workers will form a union or not.

However, anti-union aligned workers sent a series of Tweets defending the company. Twitter cracked down on these accounts pretty quickly, and Amazon has also confirmed at least one of the accounts is fake.

The accounts have only been around for a few days. In addition, many of the accounts only have a few tweets that are focused on Amazon.

One tweet says “what bothers me most about unions is there’s no ability to opt-out of dues”. This tweet came from a user using the handle @AmazonFCDarla. Another from the same user is sweet, short, and simply says “Amazon takes great care of me”.

Here is another example of a similar tweet that says ” unions are good for some companies, but I don’t want to have to shell out hundreds a month just for lawyers”. Unions can definitely be a good thing for workers to have, but all good things do have their caveats.

Most of these fake accounts involve the handle @AmazonFC followed by a first name. What makes this interesting is that Amazon previously used this handle for its Amazon Ambassadors. These ambassadors are employees paid to promote and defend it on Twitter.

Clearly, because of this, it is hard to believe that Amazon is not behind some of these accounts. Amazon did clear the air around the Darla account saying that the account is not official. However, Amazon has stayed mum on several other accounts.

An Amazon spokesperson says that “it appears this is a fake account that violates Twitter’s terms.” Thankfully Twitter has suspended several of these accounts. Twitter relayed that even Amazon Ambassadors are subject to its rules on spam and platform manipulation.

These tweets definitely seem to be trying to manipulate the platform and spam people. According to Twitter's rules, “any parody accounts must have a disclaimer in its Twitter bio.”

Amazon seems to be in damage control mode

Hopefully, these accounts are not real employees. Amazon already has anti-trust lawsuits against it. The last thing the company needs is to lose the trust of its customers as well.

Of course, with the negative news surrounding Amazon’s warehouse working conditions the company has defended itself. Amazon’s official account has tweeted asking “you don’t really believe the peeing in bottles thing, do you? If that were true, nobody would work for us.”

This story gets even better due to a tweet response to US Senator Elizabeth Warren. Senator warren accused the company of “exploiting loopholes and tax havens.”

Amazon’s response says “You make tax laws, we just follow them. If you don’t like the laws you’ve created, by all means, change them. Here are the facts: Amazon has paid billions of dollars in corporate taxes over the past few years alone".

It honestly sounds like Amazon is in damage control mode, but you can swing by their official Twitter to judge for yourself.
