Samsung is developing a new variant of the Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition) and it is seemingly nearing its market debut. The device first appeared on the Wi-Fi Alliance listing a couple of weeks back, where it received approval with the model number SM-G780G. The same device has now been spotted on Thailand's NBTC certification site, complete with its name – Galaxy S20 FE.
The NBTC listing doesn't reveal anything about the device, except that it will be a 4G phone (GSM/WCDMA/LTE connectivity). The new Galaxy S20 FE will be available with single and dual-SIM capabilities, which has been confirmed by both Wi-Fi Alliance and NBTC entries.
You might already be aware that Samsung currently sells the Galaxy S20 FE in two variants – with and without 5G connectivity. The LTE-only Galaxy S20 FE bears the model number SM-G780F while the 5G variant bears the model number SM-G781B. The upcoming SM-G780G is also an LTE-only phone.
Not much else is known about this third Galaxy S20 FE variant as of now. So it's unclear whether it will feature any hardware difference from the existing variants. However, it will ship with the latest version of Android out of the box, i.e. Android 11.
Granted, existing Galaxy S20 FE owners have already received the update to the Android 11-based One UI 3.1. However, as per Samsung's software update policy, the upcoming phone will receive updates up to Android 14 while last year's models will end their lives on Android 13.
The Galaxy S20 FE is a high-end smartphone that bridges the gap between Samsung's mid-rangers and flagships. The company started launching these stripped-down flagships last year when it threw the Galaxy S10 Lite, Note 10 Lite, and the Galaxy S20 FE on the market with an interesting mix of specs. The phones have proved to be quite popular and Samsung is seemingly preparing to introduce one more such device soon.
However, what's ironic is that this news comes at a time when Samsung is already working on the Galaxy S21 FE. This device will be a direct sequel to the Galaxy S20 FE and will boot Android 11 from day one. So it's not quite clear why Samsung wants to introduce a third variant of the S20 FE around this time. Perhaps it's intended for a few select markets.
Now that the device is picking up necessary certifications thick and fast, an official announcement shouldn't be too far off. It will be interesting to see whether and how the upcoming Galaxy S20 FE will differ from the existing variants.
