On Friday, AT&T released a press release ahead of its investor day. Highlighting a number of things it will give more details on during the investor day. Including the fact that an ad-supported HBO MAX option will be coming in June.
AT&T still hasn't mentioned any pricing for the ad-supported HBO MAX.
An ad-supported version of HBO MAX will be a major departure for HBO. As it has never ran ads on any of its channels or apps. The only ads you'd see on HBO are for other HBO shows, in between shows and movies. Showtime and STARZ also do this.
AT&T has noted that one of the big differences between the ad-supported and ad-free versions of HBO MAX will be theatrical releases. Those on the ad-supported version will not get theatrical releases for movies. Everything else will be the same, and there will be no ads on HBO original series.
AT&T has plans to bring HBO MAX to an additional 39 markets by June, these will be in Latin America and the Caribbean. While it'll expand to 21 markets in Europe afterwards.
AT&T is expecting to hit 120 to 150 million subscribers by 2025. Which is more than double the current number. Expanding to nearly 60 additional markets would definitely help AT&T hit that goal. Though, it's unlikely that they will destroy this goal like Disney+ did.
At the end of 2020, AT&T announced it had 61 million HBO MAX subscribers. Remember these are not all paying customers. As AT&T does offer its existing customers the service for free. Whether that's wireless, TV or Internet customers, the majority of them can get HBO MAX included. But that still puts them firmly in third place behind Netflix and Disney+ right now.
An ad-supported version of the service would also help HBO MAX crush that goal. As this would make the service a bit cheaper, though it's still unclear how much cheaper, just yet. Which would make it more attractive for more people.
