Qualcomm is expected to launch a follow-up to last year's Snapdragon 765 and 765G premium mid-range chipsets in the coming months. A report back in December last year suggested the new Snapdragon 7-series chipsets might arrive in the first quarter of 2021. And while the rumor mill has been rather quiet about Qualcomm's upcoming mobile platforms so far, a new leak has now got us moving.
According to the leaked information, that apparently comes from an internal document, the new Snapdragon 7-series chipsets could be marketed as the Snapdragon 775 and 775G. The leak also reveals the alleged specifications of the new chipsets.
The Snapdragon 775/775G will be reportedly based on a 5nm process. It features a Kryo 6-series CPU core setup. However, there's no information about the actual CPU core arrangement and clock speeds. The chipset will support either LPDDR5 RAM at an operating frequency of 3200MHz or LPDDR4X RAM at 2400MHz. It will support UFS 3.1 storage.
For optics, there's the Spectra 570 ISP which can handle up to three 28-megapixel cameras simultaneously. The leaked information also hints at support for a 64-megapixel + 20-megapixel dual-camera setup at 30fps. The chipset could support 4K video recording at 60fps.
Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6E with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.2, and LTE Cat. The chipset supports both mmWave and Sub-6 5G networks, with dual standby, VoNR (Voice over 5G New Radio), carrier aggregation (NR CA), and standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) support. There's also apparently support for 4×4 MIMO on the downlink and 2×2 MIMO on the uplink for Sub-6 5G, along with 256 QAM. Last but not least, the Snapdragon 775/775G may come equipped with WCD9380 and WCD9385 audio chips.
This isn't the first time we are hearing about the Snapdragon 775 SoC. Back in September last year, reports suggested that the chipset has entered development on a 6nm process. Alleged AnTuTu benchmark scores were also leaked early in December, just a day before Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 888, its latest flagship SoC.
The leaked benchmarks score suggested a significant upgrade from the Snapdragon 765 and these specs certainly point at it. Not to mention the new chipset is seemingly not based on a 6nm process as earlier reports suggested, but on a more advanced 5nm node that the likes of Samsung's Exynos 2100 and Exynos 1080, as well as the Snapdragon 888, are also based on. So we might be looking at quite a value proposition from Qualcomm.
There were rumors that Qualcomm would also announce a new premium mid-range chipset alongside the Snapdragon 888 in December. However, it wasn't to be. Now it appears the company is finally gearing up to launch the successors to last year's Snapdragon 765 and 765G. We may now see the new chipsets arrive soon.
Just so as you know, these alleged specs of the Snapdragon 775/775G were reportedly obtained from an internal document leaked over Telegram channel XiaomiUI. The folks over at XDA Developers claim that while the information is accurate, it's not very up-to-date. The leaked information apparently originates from an earlier revision that is no longer valid. So some of the specs may have changed or may change by the time the chipsets become market-ready. We will keep you updated as and when more information emerges.
