Android 12 Developer Preview 2 (DP2) is introducing some changes for picture-in-picture (PiP) mode to improve gestures and allow users to stash away videos during playback.

Spotted by 9to5Google, the biggest picture-in-picture feature is arguably the new stash feature for Android 12 DP2. And that does exactly what is implied.

As shown in the video preview of the feature — shared by the source and embedded below — users can now hide their video during playback. Specifically, the video is, at a swipe, tucked away to the left- or right-hand side of the screen. But it doesn't stop playing. Instead, it simply remains just out of view, with the leading edge still jutting out over the rest of the screen.

That way, Android users can still listen to their videos while interacting with the rest of their phone's screen as normal.

What else has changed for picture-in-picture in Android 12 DP2?

The other big change here is in the gestures for picture-in-picture mode in Android 12 DP2. Now, users can stop, play, skip, and access other features with a single tap on the PiP window. Double-tapping, conversely, swaps between a smaller winder and medium-sized window or vice versa. And, of course, the latter of those fills the width of the phone's screen.

Conversely, Google has implemented a new pinch-to-zoom feature too. That allows users to resize the window in a more granular fashion with a familiar resizing gesture.

When will you see the changes?

Now, this is only Developer Preview 2 for Android 12 and is only intended for developers. The public betas of Android 12 won't come until later on in the year. And Google will follow those up with Android 12's eventual final release. But none of that means users will necessarily see the changes even then.

As with all changes to Android that directly impact apps, app developers will need to implement the features for them to work. Until developers widely implement the alterations — and implement the alterations previously introduced that allow picture-in-picture for media playback, to begin with — end-users simply aren't going to see them in place.
