Telegram has long been featured on our top ten chat app list and a new update means it's getting even better when it comes to automatically deleting messages, animated emoji, widgets, and more. That's based on a recent blog post from the company, detailing changes in the latest update. The biggest changes on the user-facing side are those listed above, with auto-delete being the headliner for this Telegram update.

Telegram has consistently kept itself at the forefront of the curve on privacy and now that's even better. Namely, because users can now choose to automatically delete messages after a set timeframe in any chat.

Previously limited to "Secret Chats," the change means that Telegram users are free to select a chat. Then they can choose to "Clear history" from the three-dot context menu and set a timer for 24-hours or 7-days. When enabled, the change only applies to messages sent after the timer is set up. But that should still be useful for those with large groups messaging sessions set up.

Holding on the privacy front, users can now also create links to invite people to a group chat or other chat which will expire. And the expiration can be set up to take place after a set timeframe, after a certain number of people join, or using both parameters. What's more, the links can be saved as QR codes too after the update.

What else is new, besides auto-delete, in this Telegram update?

Another new user-facing feature is the Telegram widgets. Dubbed the Chat Widget, the first allows users to add a line of chats to their home screen. Those are kept up-to-date at all times, showing a preview of recent messages. A tap on a chat opens Telegram directly to that chat. For Android, specifically, that widget can be expanded as needed as more chats are added. The second, Shortcut Widget, shows only the names and profile pictures for a given chat.

The final big user-facing change is the new animated emoji. Telegram has been steadily growing its library of these alongside animated stickers since early 2020. And, as the name suggests, these are like those other emotes but animated. Now, Telegram has added two wine emojis, the clown, two kissing faces, hearts, stars, game controllers, and hand gestures to the list. The latter includes the peace sign emoji, handshake, fingers crossed, middle finger, and the hand pointing upward emoji.

Anything behind the scenes here?

In terms of other listed changes, there are two in this update. The first is the addition of Broadcast Groups. Telegram intends those groups for larger-than-average gatherings. When a group approaches the current 200,000 user limit, it will gain the option to switch over. Broadcast Groups offer an unlimited user capacity and only allow admins to chat — although members can still join voice chats.

Finally, the reporting and chat importing features have been improved in terms of usability.

All of these features are, of course, rolling out to Telegram now. So users will want to make sure that grab the latest app updates.
