Android Auto is a pretty awesome piece of technology, as it makes it easy to still access your most-used features while in the car. Being able to pull up directions, control your music or podcasts, and of course respond to incoming messages or phone calls.

But there are still a few limitations to what Android Auto can truly provide, and that’s where CarDongle comes in. This little dongle connects to your car via the USB-A port and provides a fully-functional Android operating system in a small and compact form-factor.

Instead of having to rely on Google’s limiting Android Auto interface, or deal with apps that may not be fully-compatible, you can avoid all of that with CarDongle. Since this is essentially Android, there are a few things that the CarDongle needs in order to provide all of the power that you would want.

  • 2.0GHz A53 Processor
  • Up to 4GB RAM
  • Up to 64GB of storage
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • MicroSD Card support (up to 128GB)
  • Built-in GPS antenna
  • USB Plug-and-play
  • Microphone

With CarDongle, you can use the same apps you normally would on the “old” Android Auto system. But the real fun comes in with the ability to download and sideload apps that you would rather use when on the road. Plus, the company is promising frequent software updates to ensure compatibility with your apps, along with bringing new features down the road.

So why would you want this if you already own an infotainment center with Android Auto or even Apple’s CarPlay? Well, the big benefit here is that you can upgrade your in-car system for a fraction of a price if you happen to own a head unit that is out of date. Instead of dropping hundreds of dollars on the head unit itself, and then more money on the additional parts and installation, you can just grab the CarDongle and plug it in.

You may not think that there is much interest in something like CarDongle, especially if you are happy and content with your current infotainment setup. However, the Indiegogo campaign has already surpassed its initial goal, but time’s running out for you to be able to get your hands on one at a discount. There are still a few Early Bird Perks left, meaning you could get the Car Dongle for as low as $89, which is more than 30% savings from the retail price when it officially launches.

By now, you may be asking yourself when the CarDongle will be shipping. Well, the company has already surpassed its funding goals, and the product is currently in its production stage. The company states that estimated shipping for the CarDongle will begin in March, so you won’t have to wait too long before you can upgrade your Android Auto system on the cheap.
