Audio-centric social network Clubhouse is nearing its Android debut. The massively popular audio chat app’s Android developer Mopewa Ogundipe has posted a teaser on Twitter that shows the app working on Android, specifically on a Google Pixel smartphone.
Moreover, researcher Morgan Evetts has suggested that Clubhouse may launch on Android as early as May 2021, i.e. next month. Co-founder Paul Davison had last month confirmed that the company is working on bringing the app to Google’s mobile platform in a “couple of months”. So the latest claim is in line with that. There’s still no expected release date but it’s surely coming.

Clubhouse may have begun internal testing of the app for Android
Clubhouse has been exclusive to iOS since its launch in March last year. The app is still limited to an invite-only membership system. However, its audio-based social conversations concept has proved to be revolutionary, making it a massive hit. It recently reported 10 million weekly active users, despite being in private beta. A general availability could further bolster its adoption worldwide.
Its arrival on Android is perhaps more critical to its growth though. The company has reiterated the importance of supporting the Android user base several times though there hasn’t been significant progress in this regard so far. But it appears Clubhouse has now started internally testing the app for Android. We may see it arrive on the Google Play Store as early as next month.
The company certainly cannot delay its Android launch any further. Rival companies such as Facebook and Twitter, which already have a huge user base and well-built Android, iOS, and web apps, are working on introducing similar audio-focused conversation features on their platforms.
Twitter’s Spaces has even beaten Clubhouse to Android launch. Facebook, on the other hand, recently launched a Clubhouse-inspired live Q&A app called Hotline. The social media giant also has a Clubhouse competitor in work within its existing video chat platform Messenger Rooms. The likes of Discord, LinkedIn, and Slack are also reportedly working on similar services.
All these developments mean Clubhouse cannot be toying around. It is in talks to raise funding from investors, at a valuation of somewhere around $4 billion. The company is also trying to innovate to stay on top of this race to dominate social audio. It recently added a monetization tool in the app in an effort to try and keep creators on its platform. Hopefully, we will now see Clubhouse arrive on Android sooner than later.
