The Dish Network, the fourth major wireless carrier in the US, is preparing to launch a 5G network by the end of Q3 2021, The Verge's report suggests.

After closing the deal with T-Mobile to buy Boost Mobile and the rest of Sprint's prepaid business, Dish strives to improve its position in the market. The co-founder and chairman Charlie Ergen officially announced that the company is working to offer its 5G network in 2021, and this will happen between July and September.

Ergen, who was talking in the Q4 2020 earnings call, noted that Dish can "help the United States actually start leading again in wireless." Of course, this is not the first time that Ergen tries to make the FCC happy. In the August 2018 earnings call, Ergen said their 5G goal is to help the US become "the No. 1 in 5G."

The Dish's intention to offer 5G is not a sudden decision. Since last year, Dish started to buy different spectrums for its wireless network. Also, they tried to buy some C-Band spectrum in the recent C-band auction. The auction cost them around $2 billion. The Dish is only a few months away from the launch of its first 5G network and has ambitious plans.

Offering a 5G network is very important for Dish, and even Ergen previously said that not moving toward 5G would be a "financial suicide." Dish currently owns piles of spectrums, and it can use them to expand its 5G reach. It is evident that Dish has great potentials to compete with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

Dish is ready to spend over $10 billion on developing its 5G network

As a result of Sprint and T-Mobile merging, Dish can use their network potential for a few years. Moreover, Dish announced that it would loan unused spectrum to Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile to help them expand 4G LTE networks.

But the future is all about 5G, and carriers are striving for more share from the market. Ergen had previously spoken of a $10 billion funding from three banks to secure the 5G development. Such huge funding would be a great accelerator to Dish's 5G research and expansion.

When it comes to wireless networks, price is always a controversial issue. The competition between carriers leads to less costs for customers. Dish has plans to offer 5G at a lower price than competitors. As more carriers dive into 5G, consumer prices will also fall, and customers can use quality connections.
