EarFun is a relatively new entry to the audio accessory market, first launched in 2018. But the company has also reviewed relatively well. And now it’s announced a new entry in its “Free” truly wireless earbuds line-up with the EarFun Free 2.
As denoted by the branding, the new wearable is a follow-up on 2019’s EarFun Free. That was, in turn, succeeded in 2020 by the EarFun Free Pro. The goal, as with those previous offerings, is to offer the best value around on the affordable end of the spectrum. And EarFun is hoping to do that this time around by offering aptX support at under $50. But that’s not all that makes these earbuds look like a truly high-value bargain.
Aside from aptX low latency support and several other features, one of EarFun Free 2’s biggest features is going to be waterproofing. Now, wireless headphones that are sweat-proof or -resistant are common enough. But EarFun isn’t content competing in its own price bracket on the features or audio. The company has, in fact, announced that EarFun Free 2 is entirely waterproof.
The company compares its waterproofing, dubbed EarFun SweatShield, to its competitors in the $150+ range. Specifically, that’s by noting that most of those that are waterproof are using nano-coating methods. And those methods, EarFun claims, tend to wear off after 1 to 3 months of usage. SweatShield, by comparison, is “immune” to the corrosion of the waterproofing.
And, as noted above, this is true waterproofing. EarFun indicates that its method “hermetically seals the internal circuitry” and even allows swimming. While that’s not its primary purpose, with the real purpose being safety during normal use outside of swimming, the company says it can survive being submerged for as long as 30-minutes at a time. Although water absorbs and tends to negatively impact the wireless signals. So disruption and cut-out would potentially be a problem.
Now, otherwise, EarFun Free 2 already shaping up to be a great true wireless audio offering. Despite its low cost, EarFun has packed the wearable with Qualcomm’s latest — the QCC3040 SoC. It’s also utilizing Bluetooth 5.2 instead of older protocols. In effect allowing a more stable, faster connection with the range at up to 15-meters — approximately 49-feet.
That also includes Qualcomm’s TrueWireless Mirroring Tech for cleaner connections, to begin with. Specifically, with the ability to effectively hot-swap between which earbud is connected to the smartphone and which is mirroring the connection to the other bud. And, of course, that’s in addition to voice isolation and noise suppression provided via Qualcomm cVc 8.0 ECNS. Powered by two on-bud mics.
What’s more, the new EarFun Free 2 buds have been announced with latency down at 60ms for better video and gaming experiences. So these may be the most affordable, gaming-ready true wireless earbuds on the market. Easy access to on-source AI assistants is enabled as well. And the audio itself should be well above average as well thanks to dual 6mm composite dynamic drivers.
All of that is setting aside the new and improved touch controls with an all-in-one volume control, wireless charging capability, and fast USB-C charging for up to 2-hours of playback from 10-minutes of charging. With a total playback time of 30-hours with 7-hours per charge up and 23 more from the charging case. All in a comfy design that’s engineered to sit and stay firmly seated in-ear.
For those who want the deeper specs, EarFun has included those as detailed in the table below. Although the company has not revealed exactly how much of the audible frequency range is covered by its latest buds.
