Google could be working on a new pair of Pixel Buds. First spotted by 9to5Google, two new devices from Weifang Goertek Electronics have recently popped up on the FCC database with model numbers GPQY2 and G7YPJ, suggesting this development. If you recall, Weifang Goertek Electronics was the manufacturer of the original wired Pixel Buds headset released in 2018. The model numbers of the new devices also match the style of Google's own recent products such as the Nest Audio (GXCA6) and the Nest Hub (GUIK2).

Moreover, the description in the FCC documentation further hints at new pair of truly wireless (TWS) earbuds. The two listings, which could be one each for the left and right earbuds, describe each product as a "wireless device". FCC says the devices are so small that they cannot fit a label on them. They measure 27 x 20 x 15 mm in dimension, which is not very far off from last year's Google Pixel Buds, which also had separate FCC listings for each earbud.

The devices feature Bluetooth 5.2 and support the exact same Bluetooth ranges used by the existing models. However, the power output is significantly higher on the new earbuds – 13.24mW/19.82mW as opposed to 8mW/16mW on last year's models. This should somewhat eliminate the frequent disconnection issue faced by many Pixel Buds users.

FCC listings hint at new Pixel Buds

While this FCC listing gives us enough pointers suggesting that a new pair of Pixel Buds is on the way, it's still not set in stone yet. After outsourcing the production duty of the original wired Pixel Buds headset to Weifang Goertek Electronics in 2018, Google itself made the second generation model last year. However, it appears to be going back to the original strategy for the upcoming Pixel Buds.

It's unclear though whether the new TWS offerings from Google will be a high-end model or simply a refresh of the existing pair. The current Pixel Buds lack active noise cancellation (ANC), so there's plenty of room for improvement. Not to mention, the connectivity issues that severely affect the user experience.

We will likely get to hear more about these new pair of earbuds from Google in the coming months. Last year's models had arrived in April but their successors may come a little later. Perhaps alongside the Pixel 5a, which may break cover on June 11th.

The FCC's confidentiality period for the new devices reportedly runs until September though. That's the time for Made by Google fall launches. So it's still anyone's guess as to when Google may announce its next-gen TWS earbuds. We will keep you updated as and when more information emerges.
