Facebook Satire Labels

According to The Verge, to keep users from being confused by satire accounts, Facebook is adding labels to these posts. The additional label posts from Pages appearing in users’ feeds will help reduce confusion about the origin of the post. The labels in question are “public official”, “fan page”, and “satire page”.

Facebook has already been testing the rollout of these in the United States. They are slowly rolling out but the company says that they will gradually add them to more posts. The social media giant has not given an explanation as to why it is doing this.

However, identifying satire accounts seems important to Facebook. Unfortunately, many users around the world take news from satire sites seriously. The Onion and The Babylon Bee have people who believe a lot of what they publish.

This type of news falls under misinformation in this context. Despite the fact that the poster may not intend for this to happen, this misinformation can cause issues. Many political and famous people have fallen prey to satirical news before.

Facebook is adding labels to fight misinformation

Facebook did something like this last year in June. At the time company was labeling posts from media outlets that are “wholly or partially under the editorial control of their government.” According to Facebook, outlets like these “combine the influence of a media organization with the strategic backing of a state, and we believe people should know if the news they read is coming from a publication that may be under the influence of a government.”

As a result, the company says that outlets like these need labels. Facebook has been in a crusade to clean up its platform for some time now. It really began pushing to fight misinformation during the Presidential election.

Users were using the platform for sharing political misinformation along with false news surrounding social issues. Facebook has also found itself in legal trouble revolving around misinformation, so the company trying to end it makes sense.

Facebook has also been in legal trouble surrounding its privacy practices. There was even a data leak recently which Facebook has to deal with. However, none of this seems to have slowed the company down. People still use Facebook. The company is still looking to create a smartwatch, and they are working on a Clubhouse competitor.

Facebook is the biggest social media platform around. As a result, it has the responsibility of keeping its users safe from danger. But, being as big as they are it can be hard to police its platform. However, it is nice to see the company trying.
