According to BuzzFeed News, Facebook is working on a new version of Instagram tailored to kids. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri has confirmed the news via his Twitter.

Even now, some apps have the ability to restrict children's access to certain content. But Facebook plans to go one step further and release a special version of Instagram for children. According to Mosseri, they're "exploring" a new version of Instagram with parents' control. More information about this version is on the way.

According to the Instagram user policies, children under 13 can't use the platform, and the new version will likely be for this group of potential users. The project is under the direct supervision of Adam Mosseri and Facebook VP Pavni Diwanji. Diwanji has previously worked on YouTube Kids.

Building a special version for kids has become a 'priority' for Instagram

Instagram's VP of product Vishal Shah has ventilated the idea in an internal messaging board. Moreover, he mentioned it as a priority for Instagram.

"We will be building a new youth pillar within the Community Product Group to focus on two things: (a) accelerating our integrity and privacy work to ensure the safest possible experience for teens and (b) building a version of Instagram that allows people under the age of 13 to use Instagram for the first time safely." Shah noted in the message.

Instagram will be a safer platform for young people

The idea of building a new version for kids comes on the heels of a report that Instagram is working to build a safer platform for the younger members of its community. In this regard, some measures are being taken. Including, restricting DMs between teens and adults they don't follow, prompting teens to be more cautious about interactions in DMs, making it more difficult for adults to find and follow teens and encourage teens to make their accounts private.

Instagram has also said that it is striving to improve its age detection procedure to understands people's actual age. This will help the platform to prohibit kids from signing up.

Of course, this is not the first time that Facebook wants to release a special version of its products to children. Back in 2017, they released a new version of Messenger for children between 6 and 12 years old.

The problem of inappropriate content on social media for children has always been a controversial issue. Releasing limited editions for children, imposing some restrictions, and giving parents more control will provide them with more peace of mind.
