Facebook has recently been putting a lot of effort into audio. According to TechCrunch, a new Facebook and Spotify partnership is in the works to integrate Spotify functionality into the Facebook app.
The point of this partnership is so that Facebook users can listen to their Spotify music or podcasts while in the Facebook app- there will be no need to go to the actual Spotify app. There will be an in-app media player that will play the content.
Mark Zuckerberg explained Project Boombox in an interview with Cassey Newton. He stated that one of the benefits of Project Boombox is that it will help creators who post their work to Spotify gain exposure.
Zuckerberg stated that Facebook is making a push on the audio front. In the interview, he stated, We think that audio is going to be a first-class medium and that there are all these different products to be built across this whole spectrum.” The partnership with Spotify is one indicator of that.
Facebook is also in competition with Clubhouse. It’s a new social media platform that has drop-in audio chatrooms where people can talk freely and connect with one another. Facebook is in the process of developing its own take on that concept. Details on that are scarce for the time being.
Also according to TechCrunch, Facebook unveiled a handful of products centered around audio. Facebook is working on a feature that will allow users to create and listen to short audio clips called “Soundbites.” These are equivalent to short videos that you see on Tik-Tok or YouTube but in audio form.
Facebook is also working on a platform that allows users to access podcasts from the app. More than 170 million users follow podcaster’s pages. There’s no way of listening to the actual podcast on the Facebook app at the moment, though.
Project Boombox has already been released in a few countries such as Mexico and Thailand. There’s no word on how it’s been received in those markets. Project Boombox might launch in the states in about a week.
This big push for audio, Facebook hopes, will entice more users to use the social media platform. The company in hot water because of a large data leak that happened recently. It’d be tough to regain user trust after that, but that isn’t slowing them down.
