HMD Global's former Chief Product Officer (CPO), Juho Sarvikas, is joining Qualcomm. He will be taking up the role of the VP and President for the chip giant's North America business. Jim Cathey, SVP and President of Qualcomm's global operations, announced the development on Twitter earlier this week.

Mr. Sarvikas, who has been with Nokia for more than 15 years and was serving as HMD Global's CPO as well as the Vice President of its North America business, announced his exit from the company last month. While the announcement came as a surprise, he didn't tell whether he's leaving the Finnish phone brand with immediate effect. He also didn't reveal where he's headed next. We finally have an answer now.

Quoting Mr. Cathey's tweet, Mr. Sarvikas said he will take office at Qualcomm on April 12th. "I can't wait to work with our partners and the amazing #teamqualcomm at the epicenter of the 5G revolution," he said. He has already updated his Twitter bio and the Header photo to reflect his upcoming job profile.

Juho Sarvikas joins Qualcomm after 15 years at Nokia

Mr. Sarvikas has been with Nokia throughout the company's turbulent years between 2010 and 2016. He oversaw the Finnish phone brand return to the smartphone industry under HMD GLobal in 2016, when he was also appointed as the company's CPO. Nokia has since grown into a relevant name in the industry once again and Juho was the man behind those strategic decisions. In June 2020, HMD Global named him the Vice President of the company's North American business.

Now, after 15 years with Nokia, he's leaving the company for Qualcomm, taking up another important role in North America. Reports suggest that Qualcomm is planning to release a Nintendo Switch-like Android-powered game console next year. The chip giant also recently launched the Snapdragon Insiders program as a marketing push. Mr. Sarvikas may play a key role in managing all these products and services.

Earlier reports suggested that Mr. Sarvikas will stay with HMD Global until the end of April. He was expected to be present at the company's upcoming event on April 8th, announcing new Nokia devices one last time before leaving the company. And although he isn't joining Qualcomm before the event takes place, that's unlikely to happen now that he has announced his new professional position.

HMD Global is expected to launch several new products at the event later this week. We might see two affordable 5G handsets – the Nokia X10 and Nokia X20 – as well as a couple more budget Nokia smartphones.
