The Galaxy S20 FE is the latest Samsung smartphone to receive the May 2021 Android security patch. Both 4G and 5G variants of the affordable Galaxy flagship are now receiving this month’s security update in several European countries.
The May update bears the firmware version G781BXXU3CUD6 for the Galaxy S20 FE 5G while the 4G variant of the phone is getting the same update with the firmware version G780FXXS3CUD7. The update weighs in at more than 500MB and also brings those camera and Quick Share improvements that are part of the May update for pretty much every Samsung flagship so far.
The latest update for the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 phones introduced a new Dual Recording feature in the Camera app. It’s unclear whether the Galaxy S20 FE is also getting this feature with the May security patch. Hopefully, it does.
As the name suggests, Dual Recording lets you simultaneously record a video from both the front as well as the rear camera of the phone. Something on the footprint of the Director’s View feature on the Galaxy S21 series. However, unlike Director’s View, you can only record from the primary rear camera with Dual Recording. Director’s View lets you see the feed from all of the phone’s rear cameras at the same time.
As far as the contents of the May security patch is concerned, there’s plenty to talk about here as well. The new update fixes three critical and dozens of moderate and high-risk vulnerabilities on Android OS. It also patches 23 other security vulnerabilities that are specific to Samsung’s One UI.
Samsung is on a roll lately. The company has impressed everyone with the speed at which it rolls out the latest security patches to its devices. Today itself, the Korean firm has released the May security update to the Galaxy Note 20 series, Galaxy A50, and now, the Galaxy S20 FE. That’s on top of the Android 11-based One UI 3.1 update for the Galaxy M11.
The May update for the Galaxy S20 FE is currently rolling out to users in some European countries. It should be available elsewhere in the coming weeks. If you own either of the 4G and 5G variants of the Galaxy S20 FE, be on the lookout for this update. You should receive a notification once the update becomes available for your phone. You can also manually check for updates from your phone’s Settings app, under the Software update menu.
