Samsung continues to expand the list of devices updated with the April 2021 Android security patch. The rollout began in late March and has since hit several Galaxy smartphones and tablets, both recent and not-so-recent models. The latest to join this party is the Galaxy Tab A 10.5 (SM-T595).
The affordable Galaxy tablet from 2018 is currently picking up the April security update in the UK. The latest update for the device bears firmware version T595XXS4CUD1. The official changelog only mentions the generic “improved security” and that’s probably it.
The Galaxy Tab A 10.5 arrived in September 2018 running Android 8.1 Oreo. It received its first major Android OS update to Android 9 Pie-based One UI in June 2019. Android 10-based One UI 2.0 followed in July last year. The tablet hasn’t seen any big feature updates since and it probably won’t anymore either. It should continue to receive security updates for at least one more year though.
As far as the contents of the April 2021 Android security patch are concerned, it is quite a big package. The latest Android security maintenance release (SMR) contains fixes for as many as 21 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items. SVEs are software vulnerabilities that only affect Samsung devices. The new update also fixes six critical and more than four dozen high-risk vulnerabilities found on Android OS.
Samsung has chalked up an impressive showing with Android security patch rollouts in recent times. The Korean behemoth consistently beats out every other OEM to push the latest SMRs to its devices. It is not even May yet and the company has already rolled out next month’s security patch to a number of Galaxy smartphones.
In fact, that has been the story in the past as well. Google usually publishes the latest security bulletin in the first week of the month. However, Samsung rolls out the new update to several of its devices much before that.
Anyways, despite it starting to push the May security patch to its devices, the company isn’t done seeding the current month’s security patch either. The Galaxy Tab A 10.5 (2018) is its latest device to receive the April security update. Interestingly, the tablet is scheduled to receive security updates biannually, i.e. two updates in a year. However, it received the February security patch and is now receiving one for April as well. That’s a commendable effort from Samsung.
Nonetheless, if you own the Galaxy Tab A 10.5 (2018), be on the lookout for the April security update in the coming days. The new update is currently rolling out to users in the UK but it shouldn’t be very long before the rollout expands to other territories.
