The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is one of Samsung‘s most anticipated devices of 2021. The upcoming foldable is expected to break cover alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 3 in the third quarter of the year. And ahead of that impending launch, the device is starting to pick up necessary certifications thick and fast, or at least some of its components are.
Earlier this month, the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s dual battery passed through China’s 3C certification process. The two battery packs carried the part numbers EB-BF926ABY and EB-BF927ABY. Now the same batteries have appeared on the Safety Korea portal as well as India’s BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification site.
The recent certifications further confirm what we’ve been seeing recently, that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have a smaller battery capacity than the Galaxy Z Fold 2. While the BIS listing doesn’t reveal much about the battery specifications, the listing on the Safety Korea portal also features live images of the two battery packs.
A close inspection of the images confirms that the total battery capacity of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be lesser than its predecessor. The 3C certification had revealed that the EB-BF926ABY and EB-BF927ABY batteries have a capacity of 2,060mAh and 2,215mAh respectively. This translates to a combined capacity of 4,275mAh.
This means Samsung could market the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s battery capacity as 4,400mAh. However, that would still be lower than the 4,500mAh combined battery capacity of the Galaxy Z Fold 2. A smaller battery means a lighter and thinner device, of course. Hopefully, Samsung has made improvements in most other aspects to ensure a comparable battery endurance, if not better. More power-efficient internals and better software optimizations will certainly help.
Samsung has confirmed that it’s not going to launch a Galaxy Note phone this year. Meanwhile, its third-gen foldables may arrive earlier than before. Recent reports suggest that the company may announce the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 as early as July this year.
Software development for both devices has already begun. Rumors have it that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will boast S Pen support as well. If true, it will be the first foldable smartphone to support S Pen. Of course, none of this is set in stone as yet. Things may change over the course of the development. We will keep you updated as and when more information emerges.
