When you think about gaming on mobile, you may not tend to think about the version of the operating system as much as you do the hardware you're using, but Android 12 may change that a little.

Based on the latest Android 12 developer preview, which is in its second release, gaming is going to get some pretty big quality of life improvements. While there are potentially more software changes coming in a final release, Android 12 DP2 focuses on one thing in particular.

The interesting thing is that it's something that plenty of phones already offer. Even on the current version of Android, Android 11, and even prior versions. So Google seems to be taking some inspiration from manufacturers here.

Android 12 is adding a gaming dashboard for added convenience

If you look at phones like the ROG Phone 5, or any other gaming phones really, even those from OnePlus, there's a common thread.

Really there's many common threads, but one in particular that pertains to gaming. A dedicated gaming dashboard feature. And Android 12 seems to be adding one as part of the system software. Every version has its own name but they all seek to provide more stuff to those that play games. ASUS' Game Genie tool for example, shows you frames per second. It also makes it convenient to do a ton of other stuff.

Such as streaming, and accessing other built-in features on the fly. The gaming dashboard in Android 12 won't be as robust as some others, but it will still add more than a few useful tools.

So what all does this new gaming dashboard offer? It's a small set of quick access buttons to launch certain features. There's a button for screenshots, one for looking at the game's current frame rate, one for screen recording, and one for enabling do not disturb mode.

There are also two larger square shaped buttons below those four. One square is currently empty so Google may not have implemented whatever it will do yet. The other square button though is for a direct start to live streaming your gameplay on YouTube.

While this does appear as part of the Android 12 DP2, 9To5Google points out that this seems like it could be for Pixel phones only. Even if Google does have plans to make it available to any Android 12 device, it would still be possible for this to be limited to Pixel in the beginning.

Since those tend to be the only phones that get new version Android updates right away.
