According to an FCC filing, spotted by Twitter user Android TV Guide, it looks like Walmart is preparing to release an Android TV stick. And it'll be part of its onn. brand.
Over the past few years, Walmart has been building out its own electronics brand called "onn." which has a few Android tablets available, and even some laptops. It has also revived the "Gateway" brand for laptops. Though, for the most part, devices with the "onn." branding have been super cheap, and offered a pretty terrible user-experience. And we are expecting the same for this device.
We don't know a whole lot about this Android TV stick just yet, but it is certified for Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. It also uses Google's reference design remote, which is an interesting tidbit here. The remote has buttons for YouTube, Netflix, Disney+ and HBO MAX. The four biggest streaming services on the market today.
In the pictures that we can see from the FCC, this Android TV stick actually looks a whole lot like a Roku streaming stick. But a bit more rounded. Though, there are only so many ways that you can design a HDMI stick these days.
There are two real questions that we need answered about this Android TV device. One is, whether or not it'll use Google TV. Which it likely will. Since most of the newer Android TV devices are coming with Google TV right now. The other question is going to be price. There aren't a lot of Android TV devices on the market, but the cheapest one is the Chromecast with Google TV, which is priced at $50. There's also the Xiaomi Mi Box S for $60.
If Walmart can undercut the Chromecast with Google TV, then it'll have a real winner on its hands here. As long as the experience isn't too terrible.
