Google is working to make some changes to its augmented reality (AR) SDK and make it compatible with dual cameras, Android Police reports.

The current version of Google’s AR SDK only supports one camera, limiting the depth of information that could be captured. According to the device list on the changelog, dual camera support is coming to the AR SDK in the coming weeks.

But this is not for all devices. Only Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will receive this feature at the initial phase, and the time for other devices is unknown. Choosing a 2019 flagship for receiving this interesting feature may be a little weird because the Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a are newer models with improved cameras.

Maybe the reason is laid behind the type of secondary camera. The Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a use ultrawide secondary cameras. But the Pixel 4 and 4 XL are using telephoto lenses.

Google hasn’t determined any deadline for adding this feature to Pixel 5 and 4a. But if Google wants to add more smartphones to receive dual-camera support, Pixel 5 and 4a will definitely be at the forefront.

Adding support for dual cameras is not the only change that is coming to ARCore. Google’s AR now supports more devices, and some new tools are added for developers. No more information has rolled out yet, and we need to wait for what Google brings in the coming weeks.

Dual cameras will help to build better augmented reality experiences

Traditionally, Google’s ARCore supports only one camera for creating AR content. But adding support for dual cameras will enhance the phone’s functionality for capturing information with better depth and leads to a richer AR experience.

In June 2020, Google officially released the ARCore Depth API to the public to add AR support to more devices. Many companies, including Samsung, used this API to enhance the accuracy of their AR apps.

AR experience and demands for AR content is wide-spreading

More and more companies are going toward using AR content in their apps and services. Google is at the forefront, and it is continuously working on using more AR. They recently used AR at Maps to improve pinpointing the location and increase location accuracy. Google Duo is another app that received AR effects for single and video calls.

Demand for AR content is increasing rapidly, and tech corporations are striving to incorporate more AR in their visual apps. Some Android smartphone OEMs have even included AR in the Camera app.
