On Tuesday, Roku announced its latest update to its operating system – Roku OS 10. And it is now beginning to roll out to all supported Roku devices.

The update brings a number of new features, but they are mostly focused on minor features for the platform.

First off, it is introducing a new Instant Resume feature. Similar to what we saw on the Xbox Series X|S last year. Which means that streaming apps can now pick up from where they left off. Instead of the app actually being pushed out of memory. This might not sound like a huge deal, but it does save you a bit of time when you go back to your TV. It does require some developer work though, so not all apps support it right now.

Some new gaming features too

No, Roku isn’t actually getting into gaming. But now when you plug a console into a Roku TV, the tile will change to the right name and the Roku TV will then enter gaming mode. Roku says that depending on the TV model being used, it may automatically configure for HDR gaming, auto low latency mode, variable refresh rate, high frame rate, and THX certified gaming mode too.

Not quite gaming, but there is also an “automatic WiFi detection” feature coming in Roku OS 10. So if you have separate networks for 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, the Roku device will now recommend the better option when you’re setting up. If there is any buffering while you are streaming, it will also show a pop up suggesting to move to a less congested network.

Other odds and ends

There’s a few other features coming to Roku OS 10 too. Like the ability to customize the live TV channel guide, if you have an antenna plugged in. There is also now HDR10+ on the Roku Ultra and the new Roku Express 4K Plus. There’s now virtual surround sound on the Roku Smart Streambar and the Streambar Pro.

Finally, for Apple users, Roku OS 10 also brings AirPlay 2 and Homekit support to more Roku devices.
