Both the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro sport 120Hz displays, but OnePlus does not enable this by default. Both are also set to FHD+ resolution, whereas the OnePlus 9 Pro does have a QHD+ display, but that's for another time.

Instead, OnePlus decided to make it 60Hz by default. Which is going to conserve battery life, but it won't be as smooth. So you'll want to switch to 120Hz.

However, it will not remain at 120Hz all the time. It has an option called "Smart 120Hz" so it will move between 1Hz and 120Hz depending on what you are using the phone for. If you're using Always-on Display, then it'll be set to a much lower refresh rate. As you don't need 120Hz for AOD. But if you're playing a game at 120Hz, it'll bump it up.

This is all thanks to the LTPO panel that OnePlus is using here. And it won't be a huge surprise to see this come to other devices this year – in fact, there's a rumor that Apple will use it on the next iPhone.

How To Enable 120Hz On The OnePlus 9

To enable 120Hz on the OnePlus 9, you'll first want to go into the Settings.

Scroll down to Display and tap on that.

Then tap on Advanced.

Here you'll find a number of options, including refresh rate.

Tap on Refresh Rate.

By default, the OnePlus 9 (and OnePlus 9 Pro) both ship with 60Hz as the default. So tap on "Smart 120Hz" on the OnePlus 9 Pro. For the OnePlus 9, it'll just simply be 120Hz.

It'll take a second to make the change, and you'll be set to 120Hz.

And that's it. You're now set to 120Hz on your OnePlus 9 or OnePlus 9 Pro. You will definitely notice a difference between 60Hz and 120Hz on the OnePlus 9. It might be a little tougher on the OnePlus 9 Pro, since it is dynamic and not always running at 120Hz.
