OnePlus announced its new flagship smartphones recently, and hyped up its camera setups quite a bit. OnePlus actually agreed on a 3-year partnership with Hasselblad, and these are the first devices to carry the Hasselblad branding. Hasselblad did have its hands in the color science on these two phones, but not much else, yet. Still, OnePlus managed to do some things right in the camera department on its own. In this article, we’ll show you how to use macro camera mode on the OnePlus 9 series, as that is one of the better aspects of the camera setup on these two phones.
The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro use their ultra-wide camera as their macro camera as well. That’s not a bad thing, at all, as that ultra-wide sensor is actually excellent. OnePlus decided to utilize a 50-megapixel camera sensor (Sony IMX766) here, and it attached a freeform lens to it. You’ll get really great ultra-wide shots with this camera, especially after OnePlus tweaked it via updates. In addition to those ultra-wide shots, though, that camera takes great macro shots.
The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro come with a dedicated macro camera mode. If you take a look at the image provided below this paragraph, you’ll be able to see it in the left-side menu. The mode is called “Super Macro” and it is recommended you use it for shooting distances between 1-1.5 inches. That mode is marked with a flower icon, and it’s right in the middle of the menu on the left side of the camera UI.
Now, many of you are probably wondering whether this mode activates on its own. The answer is yes, it does, on both phones. The thing is, it does that a lot better on the OnePlus 9 Pro, at least based on the software that is currently running on it. The OnePlus 9 Pro will switch to the “Super Macro” mode on its own, without a problem, when needed. The OnePlus 9, well, not so much. I found myself having to do it manually most of the time, like 90-percent of the time. I don’t know why that is, but OnePlus will probably fix that in one of the upcoming updates.
Having said that, once the phone does switch to the mode, or you do it manually, you’ll get a truly powerful macro image-shooting machine. In my testing, this camera did a great job with macro photography, especially after some updates from OnePlus. It allows you to get really close to a subject, and get a really decent photo out of it, with a lot of detail. Phones without a proper macro mode can’t get nearly as close. Do note that this mode works best in good lighting, though. You can use it in low light as well, but here’s a limit for it. If the scene is really dim, it won’t be of much use, though that’s expected.
Images taken with the “Super Macro” mode do end up looking different from the images from the main sensor. We’re not talking about different scenarios and whatnot, that’s understandable, I’m talking about the color science, and the color temperature of such images. They do tend to be a bit colder, and the colors are not as vivid as on the main camera. Don’t get me wrong, the colors are more than good, and close to what you’d get from the main camera, but they’re a bit different. Once again, that is to be expected, and is not necessarily a bad thing, not at all.
Another thing worth noting is that you can use the “Super Macro” mode even if you zoom into an image. You can use it regardless of what lens you’ve chosen in the camera UI, even though the phone’s ultra-wide lens is used to shoot macro photos, based on the info OnePlus provided.
