Instagram has been constantly improving the features and functionalities of the social media app. In line with this, Instagram is allegedly testing an auto-caption stick for video clips on Stories.
This piece of information was shared by Social media consultant Matt Navarra (via Engadget) on Twitter. Notably, the new auto-caption sticker for Stories takes a step forward in the accessibility features of the app.
The new Instagram auto caption feature transcribes the audio in Stories. Instagram has named this feature "Closed Captions" and it can be used under the sticker tab.
FYI, this feature is similar to what Instagram already has for the Threads app. A video shared by Navarra demonstrates how this Instagram auto caption feature works.
There are some customization options for it as well. Apparently, you can change the font of the captions and also change the styles of how the caption appears in your Instagram Stories.
Specifically, there are four font options and you can also change the colors of the font. Using the new Instagram auto caption feature, it will automatically transcribe whatever is said in the video.
The video shared by Matt although shows the new feature live in action, the transcription was not completely accurate.
As per the video, the auto caption feature transcribed mistakenly the word "finally" for "find". But such errors are understandable, as it is just a feature making use of your phone's microphone.
In order to use this feature, you need to tap on the sticker icon and tap on the captions sticker once you’re done recording your video. The app will then automatically auto caption whatever is said in the video or whatever audio the feature picks up from the video.
The new feature is currently available only for select Instagram users. However, posting stories with this feature is still not live for anyone yet.
Navarra also confirmed that Instagram is not testing out this new feature publicly. Which hints that this feature appeared for some users due to a glitch.
All in all, this feature would help users with hearing disabilities understand what is being said on Instagram Stories. Also, it could come in handy for users who speak different languages.
Although there are third-party apps that help to add captions, a built-in tool definitely ups the game. Folks at Engadget have reached out to Instagram to shed some more light on this new feature.
