Another patent suggests LG is bringing a phone with a roll-out display to the market. This one is a bit different, though, as it includes two displays, not one that rolls out. According to 91mobiles, the Korean OEM filed patents for this device back in 2019. They filed it under the Chinese National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), and it was published just recently.

The design is interesting

Based on the pictures from the patent, the design of this phone will be both familiar and different. The primary display will be the typical rectangular shape with rounded corners. It'll have the tall aspect ratio that everyone has come to love, and a noticeable bezel. The real magic happens when the secondary display expands. It looks like the secondary screen will be more than double the width of the primary.

As for the design of the phone's body, it looks really unexciting from the front. Turning the phone reveals that it's actually more oval in nature. There are slight curves to the front and back, which are most likely there to provide room for the screen to roll up inside. The top of the phone has a seemingly random circle. Chances are that it's the cut-out for the pop-up selfie camera.

Other than that, there isn't really any other information that can be spotted in the patent pictures. There's no indication of any ports or the overall size of the device itself. It can be expected that the device will be about the height of the average modern smartphone, but much thicker. Also, with the roll-out display, we can't realistically expect any sort of IP certification.

LG is looking for ways to compete with foldable smartphones

If LG does launch this phone in the near future, we can expect this to be LG's answer to the slew of foldable phones that have been dominating the headlines. We've seen the likes of Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola launch their own takes on the foldable phone, leaving LG and other OEM's in the dust. LG has been suffering from multiple quarters of losses, so the brand will need something radical to put them in the public's eye again.  A phone with a roll-out display just may be the thing to do it.

This, of course, should all be taken with a grain of salt, as these are only patents. LG has filed patents for rollable screens in the past and we've yet to see any of them come to fruition. Hopefully, LG will be going toe-to-toe with the other flexible display devices soon enough.
