Magic: The Gathering Arena is mobile's latest card battler, having just released today on both Android and iOS platforms. It's a free-to-play mobile version of the physical card game that's dominated tournaments for the better part of three decades.

Releasing in 1993, Magic: The Gathering quickly became a global sensation. It also became the new obsession for many players of similar games. Over the years card battlers transitioned to mobile devices. Just like everything else. And while Blizzard's Hearthstone might be the most popular card battler video game, Magic: The Gathering Arena stands a good chance of taking over that title.

Magic: The Gathering Arena is the original strategy game, but for phones

There's nothing like playing a game in the heat of competition in person. But the current state of things makes that more or less a really bad idea for the time being.

The good news for Magic: The Gathering fans, is that Magic: The Gathering Arena is described as the original strategy game, but for phones. So you should be able to expect all of the familiarity of the physical card game in a digital format.

Because of this, there are also some benefits that the original simply cannot provide. Such as cool graphical animations for cards you play on the board. And of course the ability to play with anyone no matter where you are. So long as you have a data connection.

The game features cross play too, so you can match up with other mobile players on Android or iOS. But you can also match up against players on Windows or Mac. From a player standpoint, it couldn't be better. As you should have almost no trouble finding matches.

Newcomers can learn the ropes with an informative tutorial

As strategy card games go, Magic: The Gathering is probably one of the harder ones to learn. Practice makes perfect, of course. So the more you play the better you'll likely get.

For newcomers to the game, MTG Arena has a tutorial that can walk you through the ins and outs of the game's basics. From there, it's up to you, the player, to build off those learned details and create your own techniques for winning.

The game provides players with everything from 15 unique decks to build your own custom deck, to daily login rewards. And if you played MTG Arena on PC, you get access to any decks you already have. As you simply log in with your Wizards Of The Coast account.

If you're ready to dive in, you can grab the game from the Play Store button below.
