Samsung's 2018 flagship Galaxy Note 9 is picking up a new software update that brings the latest March 2021 Android security patch to the device. The update is currently rolling out in the company's home country South Korea with the firmware version N960NKSU3FUC1. Both unlocked and carrier variants of the phone are picking up the new update in the country.

This update only brings the latest Android security patch to the Galaxy Note 9. So don't go deep looking for any new features. However, as far as the contents of the March security patch are concerned, it includes fixes for 19 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items, including a couple of high-severity threats related to the Exynos 990 processor. SVEs are software vulnerabilities that only affect Samsung devices. Moreover, the latest update also contains fixes for four critical and dozens of high-risk vulnerabilities found in the Android OS.

Galaxy Note 9 gets the March security patch with a new update

Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 9 in August 2018 with Android 8.1 Oreo. The S Pen-wielding Galaxy flagship has since received updates to Android 9 Pie as well as Android 10. It is currently running Android 10-based One UI 2.5. Since the phone is not covered by Samsung's recently-upgraded software support policy, which promises three generations of Android OS updates to the company's recent flagships as well as select mid-rangers, the Galaxy Note 9 will end its life on Android 10.

However, it will continue to receive security updates for at least until August 2022. Samsung recently confirmed that almost the entirety of its Galaxy devices launched in 2017 and beyond will receive security updates for up to four years from launch. Flagship and enterprise models will receive security updates every month for the first two years. The frequency of these updates will start to decrease since then.

By the time the devices enter the fourth year of the cycle, they will only receive security maintenance releases biannually, i.e. two security patches in a year. The Galaxy Note 9 is currently on Samsung's monthly security update schedule. However, it may soon drop down to the quarterly or even the biannual schedule.

Nonetheless, the device had received the February 2021 Android security patch and is now getting the March update as well. The latest update should expand to other regions in the coming days. You will receive a notification prompting you to download the update over the air (OTA). You may also manually check for updates through the Software update menu in your phone's Settings app.
