Meizu has just announced its new flagship smartphones, the Meizu 18 and 18 Pro. The company hasn’t announced new smartphones in about 10 months, since May last year. That’s when the Meizu 17 and 17 Pro flagships dropped.

A while back, Meizu did say that it will focus on high-end devices only, which results in only a couple of phone announcements per year for them. That is at least the case at the moment, though it may change moving forward.

Having said that, the Meizu 18 and 18 Pro got announced in China, though they’ll probably be made available in other markets as well. Chinese variants do not come with Google services, of course, so we cannot really talk much about software.

They look almost the same, while the 'Pro' unit is larger

Regarding the design, both are made out of metal and glass, and both come with curved displays. The Meizu 18 is smaller, but the design is pretty much the same, save for the cameras on the back.

Both phones include a display camera hole, and it is centered. The bezels are almost non-existent on these devices, as you can see. All the physical buttons lie on the right-hand side of each phone.

These are some differences in the spec department, so we’ll cover those first, and then talk about what’s different between them.

The Meizu 18 features a 6.2-inch panel, while a 6.7-inch one is included on the Meizu 18 Pro. The displays, other than their size, are identical. We’re looking at QHD+ (3200 x 1440) AMOLED displays here, with HDR10+ support.

Both displays feature a 120Hz refresh rate, and they’re protected by the Gorilla Glass 6. These panels do get quite bright as well, up to 1,300 nits peak brightness.

Both devices are fueled by the same processor, the Snapdragon 888 SoC, the most powerful processor Qualcomm has to offer. Both phones come in 8 GB and 12 GB RAM variants. We’re looking at LPDDR5 RAM here, by the way. 8 GB RAM models come with either 128 GB or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. 12 GB RAM units offer 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

Android 11 comes out of the box with Flyme 9

Both phones offer dual SIM support (2x nano SIM), and both ship with Android 11 and Flyme 9 installed on them. 3D Sonic ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner is a part of both smartphones, as is a Type-C USB port. You’ll find dual (1216 linear + 1012) speakers inside both phones.

Both devices support 5G connectivity, and Bluetooth 5.2. Needless to say, an NFC chip is included in both phones as well. Both devices support fast charging. The Meizu 18 supports 36W wired Super mCharge fast charging, while the ‘Pro’ model offers 40W Super mCharge fast wired and wireless charging. The 'Pro' unit also supports 10W reverse wireless charging. The Meizu 18 includes a 4,000mAh battery, while the ‘Pro’ model comes with a 4,500mAh unit.

The Meizu 18 Pro offers a more powerful camera setup

A camera department is a place where most differences lie, when it comes to these two phones. The Meizu 18 features a triple camera setup on the back. It comes with a 64-megapixel main unit (Sony’s IMX682 sensor, 0.8um pixel size, f/1.6 aperture, 7P lens, and Ultra SMA OIS). In addition to that, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide camera (Samsung S5K3P9SX sensor, f/2.2 aperture) is included, along with an 8-megapixel telephoto camera (OmniVision OV08A10 sensor, f/2.4 aperture, 3x zoom).

The Meizu 18 Pro, on the other hand, comes with four rear-facing cameras. A 50-megapixel main camera (Samsung S5KGN1 sensor, 1.4um pixel size, f/1.9 aperture, 7P lens) is backed by a 32-megapixel ultra-wide unit (Sony IMX616 sensor, f/2.2 aperture, 2cm macro). An 8-megapixel telephoto camera (OmniVision OV08A10 sensor, f/2.4 aperture, 3x zoom) is also here, as is 0.3-megapixel ToF sensor (Samsung 33D, f/1.4 aperture).

The Meizu 18 includes a 20-megapixel front-facing camera (f/2.2 aperture), while the Meizu 18 Pro comes with a 44-megapixel selfie camera (Samsung GH1 sensor, f/2.4 aperture).

The Meizu 18 is shorter, narrower, and lighter

The base model measures 152.4 x 69.2 x 8.18mm, while it weighs 162 grams. The Meizu 18 Pro, on the other hand, measures 162.5 x 73 x 8.1mm, and weighs 189 grams.

The base model comes in Gray, White, and Blue colors, and its pricing starts at CNY4,399 ($680), while it goes up to CNY4,999 ($773). They are already available to pre-order in China, and will go on sale on March 8.
