YouTube may be poised for a new set of features for Chromecast, including at least one that helps the app itself work more like a remote while streaming media to a Chromecast device. That's according to recent reports stemming from Redditors who have allegedly already seen the change appearing in the wild.

How is this YouTube update for Chromecast significant?

With the new feature in place, Redditors report that connecting to Chromecast is no longer a bare-bones experience. Namely, the Chromecast-connected display no longer simply shows a "ready to watch" image. With the app waiting on users to select videos before displaying anything.

Instead, the display shows a range of suggested videos for users to watch next. And that's paired with a new UI for users' Android phones during streaming too. Rather than showing the full YouTube app, the phone effectively turns into a remote for the video that's playing. That allows changes to resolutions, captions, and subtitles, as well as 'stats for nerds' and more.

All of that is a far cry from the current layout.

How is YouTube Building this?

As noted above, some Redditors are already seeing the new interface under testing. So it would appear that YouTube is all but ready to go with an update to make the Chromecast experience better — whether it ultimately keeps the remote-like features or not. But that development shouldn't be too surprising either.

The company has steadily been improving all of its apps from YouTube Music to YouTube TV over the past several months. And with more ways to watch than ever before, and more controls than ever before, a new remote-based UI is a natural progression. All of this appears to be packed into an HTML 5 web app too, according to Redditors, which is another shift that Google has also been making. So the rapid development and deployment here are to be expected.

Whether or not the new experience will be finalized and rolled out to everybody, however, is anybody's guess.
