The OnePlus 9’s Sony IMX789 sensor just got detailed before the company’s launch event. Several sources shared some information about it, while OnePlus added some fuel to the fire as well.
So, the company did confirm that the OnePlus 9 series will include the Sony IMX789 camera sensor, for its main camera. We’re still not sure if that will be limited to the OnePlus 9 Pro, or will the regular model also offer it.
That camera sensor will have dual native ISO, full-pixel omni-directional autofocus, and it will be able to record 4K video at 120 FPS. On top of that, 8K video recording at 30 FPS will also be supported, as will real time HDR video processing.
This sensor is custom designed for the OnePlus 9 series, and Hasselblad cameras. The sensor will also feature Sony’s Digital Overlap HDR (DOL-HDR). Now, unlike staggered HDR, DOL can capture several exposures simultaneously, which should help remove ghosting caused by moving objects.
Now, the first video actually demonstrates the freeform lens, reports GSM Arena. That lens will be included for the ultra-wide angle camera, and it should help with distortion (1-percent vs 10-20-percent for a typical aspheric lens).
This system is somewhat unique. It uses two cameras placed lengthwise along the phone with two prisms redirecting light 90-degrees. The company’s image processing will stitch the image in real time to create the extra-wide panorama with a 140-degree FoV.
The Sony IMX789 sensor will deliver a 16:11 aspect ratio, which will make it great for shooting both 4:3 photos and 16:9 video. 12-bit RAW will also be supported for photography, while Hasselblad will share its technology for capturing “true to life colors”. It seems like that’s as far as Hasselblad’s involvement goes this time around.
According to the provided information, OnePlus is also planning to boost the selfie camera. It will include a new autofocus system that can get a lock 5-10 times faster than a regular camera. It will only need 1 millisecond to do it, reportedly.
The minimum focus distance has been shortened to 15cm (6 inches), says the source. The fast reaction time of the autofocus system will allow it to keep a focus lock even if you move your hand.
Needless to say, all of this sounds really interesting. OnePlus seems to be heavily focused on the cameras this time around, let’s see what the company came up with. Tune in on March 23.
