UPDATE: We're not sure the OnePlus 9R has an AMOLED display. OnePlus did not mention whether it's AMOLED or LCD in its official documents, and reports are all over the place. It clearly says AMOLED for the other two units, while not for this one, which leads us to believe this is an LCD panel.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: In addition to announcing the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro flagship smartphones, OnePlus announced a third OnePlus 9 series handset. That phone is called the OnePlus 9R, and it’s exclusive to one country, India. That is the case for the time being, at least.
The OnePlus 9R does look the part as a member of the OnePlus 9 series. It is inferior to both the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro, though. We’ll get to that in a second, let’s talk about its design real quick first.
This handset comes with thin bezels, though its bottom bezel is thicker than the rest of them. It includes a display camera hole in the top-left corner, and it features a flat display.
You’ll notice four cameras on the back of this device, two of which are quite large. They’re all lined up vertically, and placed in the top-left corner of the phone’s back. The back side of the device is curved towards the sides, similar to the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro.
Things do get interesting when we look at this phone’s specs. It’s like a cross between the OnePlus 8T and OnePlus 9. The phone features a 6.5-inch fullHD+ AMOLED display, like the OnePlus 8T and OnePlus 9. That panel is also 120Hz, like on the other two phones. It’s not adaptive, though.
The device is fueled by the Snapdragon 870 SoC, and it does support 5G connectivity. That SoC may seem familiar to some of you as the recently-announced POCO F3 is using it. It’s a very capable SoC.
Now, in regards to cameras, the OnePlus 9R features 48, 16, 5, and 2-megapixel units. The 48-megapixel one is the Sony IMX586 sensor from the OnePlus 8 and 8T. That 16-megapixel sensor is the phone’s ultra-wide camera, while the 5 and 2-megapixel units are macro and monochrome sensors, respectively.
This handset does include stereo speakers, while it also comes with UFS 3.1 flash storage. A 4,500mAh battery is included in the package, and that battery can be recharged using Warp Charge 65. In other words, this phone offers 65W wired charging.
The device comes with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM with 128GB or 256GB of storage, respectively. An in-display fingerprint scanner is included, an optical one. Bluetooth 5.1 is also a part of the picture, as is an alert slider.
The OnePlus 9R comes in Lake Blue and Carbon Black color variants. As mentioned earlier, this phone is an Indian exclusive. It will become available to pre-order in early April. Its 8GB RAM model is priced at ₹39,999, while the 12GB RAM model costs ₹43,999. Here's more information about the OnePlus 9 series.
