The Verge has reported that Qualcomm has announced Snapdragon Sound. Snapdragon Sound is “a chain of audio innovations and software” according to Qualcomm. These innovations and software will work to significantly improve audio quality when listening to music through wireless headphones, earbuds, and other devices.

Qualcomm’s goal here is to deliver “high-resolution, wired quality audio, wirelessly” according to James Chapman VP of voice, music, and wearables. Considering the fact that almost every high-end smartphone manufacturer is pushing their wireless headphones and earbuds this is great news.

You See Snapdragon Sound takes advantage of Qualcomm’s latest processors, Bluetooth audio, SoCs, and codecs like aptX Adaptive. By using these the company can achieve playback of hi-fi music up to 24-bit 96kHz.

Now this concept of high-quality wireless audio is not new to Android. In fact, Sony has been pushing its own LDAC technology to make this concept more widespread. LDAC transmits data up to three times faster than the standard SBC Bluetooth codec.

Unlike Sony though, Qualcomm’s components and technology are already available in headphones from many manufacturers. This list of manufacturers includes Bose, Jabra, 1More, Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, Anker, and more.

The Snapdragon Sound badge will appear on the boxes of audio products and smartphones that support Snapdragon Sound. Unfortunately, any pre-existing devices will not be updated to support this new innovation.

Snapdragon Sound devices could be coming soon

However, Xiaomi and Audio-Technica should bring the first Snapdragon Sound products within the next few months. The new innovation not only makes it easier to enjoy hi-res music, but it will also focus on improved, clearer voice call quality.

Gamers will also benefit from this new chain of audio innovations and software. Gamers will see lower latency down to 89 milliseconds. Another priority will be connection stability. Qualcomm is promising minimal dropouts and glitches even in the busiest wireless signal environments.

Qualcomm says that “Snapdragon Sound optimized devices will be tested for interoperability in Qualcomm Technologies’ dedicated test facility." These devices will be tested on measures of performance including audio quality, latency, and robust connectivity.

However, not everything is a focus of the new technology. To clarify, multipoint pairing for two simultaneous Bluetooth connections will not be focused on particularily. This may not seem like a big deal, but the multipoint pairing is a useful feature.

Especially these days when people find themselves stuck at home a lot. With multipoint it is easier to switch between your laptop you take zoom calls on, and your smartphone where you can listen to relaxing music.

Recently Spotify announced it will offer a lossless streaming tier later this year as an add-on for Premium subscribers. Other services like Amazon Music and Tidal offer HD streaming options. With Snapdragon Sound Qualcomm is making it easier for subscribers to enjoy this music.
