ASUS has officially lifted the curtain on its latest gaming smartphone, the ROG Phone 5, which comes packed with enough powerful specs to make any gamin enthusiast salivate.
This is the fourth phone in the series. Much of the physical design is very similar to past models, the tech on the inside is very much different from before. At least most of it is. Indeed, the phone has a long list of specs that showcase ASUS was intent on one-upping not only every other gaming phone brand, but also itself.
Boasting the latest mobile platform from Qualcomm and a super low-latency touch-sampling rate for its display, the ROG Phone 5 is likely to deliver an excellent gaming experience. No matter which model you choose. Yes, ASUS is releasing three models of this device.
The standard ROG Phone 5, and then the Pro and Ultimate models. The latter of those coming with a staggering 18GB of RAM.
ASUS' ROG Phone series has always sought to wow the mobile gaming community with its hardware and features. And the ROG Phone 5 series with its specs is no different.
On paper, each of the three models has an impressive set of specifications that will no doubt make them hard to beat. And with all that powerful hardware you can expect to play games for longer, with higher graphics settings, while being even more immersed.
New, higher quality speakers (which are once again tuned by Dirac), will help plunge you into the world of the game. Thanks to a specially designed Game Mode sound profile that enhances the sounds of things like foot steps and bullet fire.
ASUS also reduced the amount of heat your fingers and hands come into contact with. The new and improved heat dissipation system sees the PCB in the middle of the phone so your hands aren't as close to the components that will generate the most amount of heat.
And the display now has a touch-sampling rate of 300Hz and a refresh rate of up to 144Hz. Which you can cycle up to from the quick settings button like before.
Ever since the first device in this series ASUS has used two AirTriggers (ultrasonic buttons) on the right side of its phones. As a result, when you flipped them into landscape mode you had two buttons on top that you can use for games in addition to the touch controls.
ASUS has bumped that up by adding two more AirTriggers that sit on the back of the device. Though you will only get these on the Pro and Ultimate models of the phone. However, the standard model isn't entirely left without. Because the new AeroActive Cooler 5 fan attachment has two paddle-style buttons akin to those on the Xbox Elite Series 2 and various Scuff controllers.
With the standard model this is an optional accessory so it doesn't come in the box, but even on the Pro and Ultimate versions, which do come with it, the fan covers up the back AirTriggers. So you're not getting any less in terms of additional controls. Basically whichever model you go with, there's a way for you to have even more buttons at your fingertips.
While all three of these models are coming to the US, none of them have confirmed pricing or availability dates yet. However, ASUS has made the announcement much earlier than last year.
So that means a global launch is coming around earlier too. The Ultimate model will be quite limited though. So you'll probably have to buy it as soon as you can as ASUS won't be making nearly as many of them.
