A new leaked render of Spotify's car media player, dubbed "Car Thing," has just popped up. According to The Verge, this render was actually found hidden within the code of the Spotify app. These images were found by Steve Moser who writes at MacRumors.

The "Car Thing" looks like a tiny smart display

The overall design of Spotify's Car Thing appears to have a small but serviceable screen with slightly rounded edges. It'll have a decent bezel around it which houses two components to the right of it. The large knob looks like it will be for the primary navigation through the interface- either that or just for scrolling through songs. There seems to be a small button under it.

On top of the device, there look to be five buttons. These might be for the basic play/pause and track skip controls. That may be a good move, as it'll be safer to switch and pause tracks with physical buttons while on the road. With physical buttons come the benefit of muscle memory. It's riskier to look down at a display while driving.

The illustrations found by Moser show that the right-most top button has a ring around it, which distinguishes it from the other four buttons. It may be the power button. The illustrations also indicate how the device will attach to the dashboard. It looks like it will be small enough to be clipped onto the air vent. It will latch onto a small clip that rests in the air vent.

Details like the screen size and resolution have not been revealed as of yet. Spotify has not indicated what the internals of this device will be, or whether this will have any interaction with services like Android Auto. The images are hidden inside the app's code give hope that this may still be coming in the near future.

The Car Thing's design changed drastically from its announcement

When Spotify announced the Car Thing back in 2019, the design looked wildly different. The display was circular, and jutting out from it was a little panel with four buttons. With this leak, we see that Spotify made some major changes to its design. It looks more in line with GPS devices and smart displays that we see today.

Details are scarce on when we can expect to see this device hit the shelves. At this point, it's hard to tell if Spotify will even launch it at all. With Spotify making its foray into the hardware industry, it's tempting to wonder if other services will follow suit.
