Samsung has announced a new System-on-a-Chip (SoC) that promises to greatly improve the power efficiency and network capacity of next-generation cellular radios. The SoC will be used in the company's Massive MIMO and other advanced radios to enhance 5G network performance. Samsung and Marvell, a Bermuda-based semiconductor manufacturer, jointly developed this SoC.
Samsung says the new solution will improve the performance of cellular radios by introducing new technologies. The SoC significantly increases the capacity and coverage of the next-generation radios. It also decreases their power consumption and size by compressing much of algorithms and functionality into a single solution.
According to Samsung, the new chipset reduces power consumption by up to 70 percent compared to previous solutions. It also supports both 5G and 4G networks simultaneously.
"Marvell and Samsung are leading the way in helping mobile operators deploy 5G with greater speed and efficiency. This latest collaboration advances what's possible through SoC technology, giving operators and enterprises a distinct 5G advantage through optimized performance and power savings in network deployments," said Daniel Newman, Founding Partner at Futurum Research, an independent research, analysis, and advisory firm.
Samsung and Marvell have partnered in the past as well, specifically in developing new and advanced 5G solutions. In March last year, the two companies had joined hands to offer cost-effective 5G network infrastructure solutions to network operators. Now they are teaming up again to improve the performance of next-generation cellular radios, thereby bringing advancements to 5G connectivity.
"Samsung prioritizes the development of high-impact 5G solutions that offer a competitive edge to our operators. We look forward to introducing this latest solution to the market shortly," said Junehee Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D, Networks Business at Samsung.
Marvell also has been strengthening its position in the 5G silicon industry lately. The company last month signed a deal to supply baseband processor silicon to Japanese IT giant Fujitsu. Raj Singh, Executive Vice President of the company's Processors Business Group said they are "honored to work with Samsung for the next generation Massive MIMO radios". He reiterated that the new chipset "significantly raise the bar in terms of capacity, performance, and power efficiency."
Samsung did not reveal an exact launch time frame for the new SoC. However, the company said the chipset is being readied for market introduction to Tier One operators in the second quarter of this year.
