Back in June 2018, Samsung had announced its commitment to expand the use of renewable energy in its operations. The company vowed to source all the energy requirements for its worksites in the US, Europe, and China from renewable sources by 2020. The Korean firm has now confirmed that it has achieved its goal of 100 percent renewable energy for these worksites.
Samsung has taken several big steps towards a sustainable future in recent years. As part of these efforts, the company announced its renewable energy goals in 2018, aiming for energy efficiency and operational emissions reductions.
By the end of 2019, the Korean behemoth had reached 92 percent reusable energy at its worksites located in the US, Europe, and China. And in 2020, it achieved the goals.
Samsung is also expanding the use of renewable energy at its factories in various other regions around the world. In its home country South Korea, the company has installed solar and geothermal facilities for renewable energy production across various worksites throughout the nation. It has also installed geothermal power generation facilities in parking lots, buildings, roofs, and new construction sites across its Suwon, Giheung, and Pyeongtaek campuses.
Samsung doesn't reveal whether it plans to achieve 100 percent renewable energy at these locations as well. However, the company says it is promoting renewable energy usage with specific regional action plans. Some of those works include a "renewable energy supply contract with wind and solar power suppliers in India; the purchase of renewable energy certificates in Mexico; and the specific percentages of renewable energy set for the company's worksites in Brazil."
Samsung's steps towards a sustainable future have also seen the company make energy-efficient and eco-friendly products in recent years. The company's 2021 Smart TVs come with solar cell-powered remote controls that can be recharged through indoor as well as outdoor lighting, or USB. Samsung says this step will reduce the wastage of AA batteries by around 99 million units over the course of seven years.
The Korean giant has also cut back on the use of plastic material for the packaging of its devices. Moreover, it has been using recycled materials in the rear covers of its monitors and signage. The company plans to expand the usage of recycled materials into more components across various products in the future.
Overall, Samsung is aiming to use 500,000 tons of recycled material and collect, and potentially reuse, 7.5 million tons of waste by 2030. Its Visual Display Business alone is aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25,000 tons annually. This is apparently equivalent to the absorption of greenhouse gases by 3.8 million 30-year-old pine trees over a whole year.
This is just the tip of the iceberg that is Samsung's efforts towards a sustainable future. It has been using Polyketone, a material that contributes to the reduction of carbon monoxide, on its smartphones and tablets since 2016, including the recently-launched Galaxy S21 series. The company has also reduced the standby power consumption of its smartphone chargers over the years. It is aiming to reduce the standby power consumption of chargers to zero in the coming years.
Samsung's efforts towards a sustainable future haven't gone unnoticed. The company has been recognized with various awards for its measures in recent times. The Galaxy S21 series received the "Reducing CO2" certificate from the Carbon Trust. Its 512GB eUFS 3.1 storage chip has also picked up the semiconductor industry's first "Reducing CO2" label.
Moreover, the Carbon Trust has also awarded the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) certification to Samsung's nine memory products. These include four DRAM solutions, three solid-state drives (SSDs), and two embedded storage devices. Last but not least, a total of six Samsung refrigerator models have picked up the 2020 ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Samsung says it will continue its efforts towards a sustainable future while monitoring the ongoing climate change situation. It also promises to promote the usage of renewable energies. The company says it will pursue more energy-efficient products and manufacturing processes in the future to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
