Samsung is filling up the mid-range phone market with its Galaxy A series of phones. News about the rumored A82 5G has been traveling through the grapevine. According to Samsung’s security updates page, the new Galaxy A82 5G has just been confirmed- and we don’t think Samsung really meant to confirm it.

The security page confirms that it will get quarterly security updates

This was spotted by Android Central. The security updates page has a sea of Samsung phones and tablets that are to be getting updates. Going down the list, there are devices that are to get monthly security updates, quarterly updates, and biannual updates. The last section has the Galaxy S8 Lite, while the Galaxy S8 and S8+ will no longer be receiving updates.

The Galaxy A82 5G was under the quarterly updates section. This will confuse most people because the newer the handset, the more frequently it receives updates. Devices like the Galaxy Z Fold, the Galaxy Flip, the Galaxy S21, and other phones released between 2020 and 2021 are getting monthly updates. Phones like the Galaxy Note FE, the Galaxy A6, and Galaxy A9, on the other hand, will be getting the biannual updates.

The Galaxy A82 5G landing with quarterly updates means that it will be a step behind the other handsets in terms of security patches. Those who are planning on getting this device will have to keep that in mind.

The new Galaxy A82 5G will have an impressive display, but not the best processor

One of the headline features of the Galaxy A82 5G is the display. Most of the Galaxy A phones have a 1080p+ display. The also-rumored Galaxy Quantum 2 will have one, but it will run at 120 Hz. The display on the Galaxy A82 5G will also run at 120 Hz, but it will also be a QHD+ display. This puts it in line with the top smartphone displays of the year.

The SoC that powers the new Galaxy A82 5G is expected to be the Snapdragon 855+. This chip was introduced back in late 2018. The fact that it’s running on an older chip might be the reason that it’s on quarterly updates. The chip should probably serve the device well, but it might be a challenge because it still has to push that QHD+ display at 120 Hz.

Other details on this device are scarce. There’s no word on when it will launch or what price it will cost when it does. More information will be coming out in the near future, as an official launch should be soon.
