Samsung Display developing foldable OLED panels to supply Oppo, Xiaomi, and Google has been reported by theElec. Samsung Display has been the leader in creating foldable displays for some years now. As a result, the company will be supplying OEMs who are looking to develop their own foldable phones.
The good thing is that smartphones using these panels will launch within the year. Samsung is developing a panel for Oppo that folds from top to bottom. This means that the device seems to be an in-folding clamshell-type device. The size of the device will be 7.7-inch unfolded with an outer screen 1.5 to 2-inches in size.
The Oppo device will be larger than the 6.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Oppo unveiled an outward folding 7.7-inch foldable prototype. Last year Oppo used multiple partners to develop those panels. Oppo used Samsung Display, BOE, and Visionox. However, Samsung Display will be Oppo’s sole partner this year.
Continuing the trend of inward folding foldable devices is Xiaomi. Xiaomi showed off a 7.92-inch screen which was developed in partnership with Visionox. However, this year Xiaomi wants to create an 8.03-inch panel.
Samsung Display and CSOT are making the new panel. CSOT and BOE supplied foldable panels for the Motorola Razr.
Now Google is also looking into making a foldable device. Google is working with Samsung Display to make a 7.6-inch in size.
In-folding foldable devices are quickly becoming the go-to implementation. In-folding devices can protect the screens better than out-folding devices. For example, both Royole and Huawei chose the out-folding route for their foldable devices back in 2019.
However, Huawei is now using the in-folding implementation for its new Mate X2. Huawei is not working with its rival Samsung, and instead is using BOE for its panels.
Samsung Display developing foldable panels for other companies is not surprising. They are the leader in the market, but Chinese panel companies are making their own panels as well. In the Chinese market BOE, CSOT, and Visionox are leading the way.
Making a foldable smartphone is becoming a big trend. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip foldable lead the foldable device market. The market is still young. As a result, foldable are expensive.
But as more companies introduced their own foldable devices and the market becomes more saturated the cost should go down. 2021 is looking to be an interesting year for foldable devices smartphones in general. Only time will tell how the market will continue to grow.
