The next generation of Samsung‘s foldable smartphones may come with a stronger design. The company recently filed for a trademark for the moniker ‘Armor Frame,’ which is a new type of smartphone frame. The accompanying documents don’t reveal when and on which device we’ll see the new frame. However, speculations are that Samsung is developing the ‘Armor Frame’ for the upcoming two Galaxy foldables – Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 (Samsung is skipping Galaxy Z Flip 2).
Samsung initially filed for the ‘Armor Frame’ trademark in its home country South Korea on April 13th, 2021. It also filed for the same trademark in Europe and the US on the same day.
Samsung uses aluminum frames on its high-end smartphones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy Z Flip. Aluminum is heavy but not as strong as steel. So to increase the frame’s strength while also reducing the weight, the company might switch to a different material for its next-gen premium devices, possibly Carbon or Titanium.
Since the South Korean behemoth is betting heavily on foldable smartphones, there’s a good chance the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 might debut the ‘Armor Frame’. Moreover, the current Fold 2 is quite heavy at 282 grams. Samsung might be looking to reduce the weight of its successor by using a stronger but lighter material for its frame.
That said, it’s unclear what material the ‘Armor Frame’ would be made of. But going by its literal meaning, one can expect it to be strong. Perhaps it may boast military-grade certification, Dutch publication LetsGoDigital speculates. That would certainly give consumers more confidence in foldable smartphones, as they are currently seen as fragile and prone to physical damages than conventional candy-bar smartphones.
Moreover, Samsung is also said to use a stronger Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The company is exploring the possibility of offering S Pen support with its foldable devices as it prepares to wind down its current S Pen-wielding smartphone lineup, Galaxy Note. Samsung has already confirmed that there will be no Galaxy Note smartphone this year.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 2, meanwhile, may arrive earlier than expected this year. Firmware development for both phones is already underway. Recent reports suggest that the devices may arrive as early as July. So expect to hear more about this ‘Armor Frame’ in the build-up to the launch.
