Samsung has received the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification in South Korea for the OLED screens used in the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Z Flip. The EPD certification is awarded to environmentally friendly products by the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute. The quasi-governmental institute has set certain criteria that look into the sustainability of the product throughout its lifecycle, including the manufacturing process.

According to a new report coming from Korea (via), the institute studied Samsung’s carbon emission, water usage during the manufacturing process, effects on water, and several other criteria that go into the production of the OLED screens for three months. The OLED panel used in the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Z Flip passed a total of seven criteria to earn the EPD certification.

To recall, the Galaxy Note 20 sports a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display. It is a Full HD+ panel (1080 x 2400 pixels) with a 60Hz refresh rate. The OLED panel comes with Gorilla Glass 5 protection and features HDR10+ certification and S Pen compatibility.

The Galaxy Z Flip, on the other hand, features a 6.7-inch foldable Dynamic AMOLED display. It is also a Full HD+ panel with a 60Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ certification. However, it comes with Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) protection to enable folding of the display and lacks S Pen support. Samsung has yet to bring S Pen compatibility to its foldable lineup. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 could boast that added feature.

Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Z Flip OLED screens receive environmental certification

Samsung has been taking various steps to make its products environment-friendly and those efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. The company has picked up several awards for its steps towards a sustainable future in recent times. Samsung’s Galaxy S21 series recently received the “Reducing CO_2″ certificate from the Carbon Trust.

The Carbon Trust has also awarded the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) certification to the company’s nine memory products. Moreover, several Samsung refrigerators also picked up the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last year.

Samsung Display, the company’s display manufacturing arm, has received several such awards as well. Last year, the company picked up the Platinum Grade certification from Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for its efforts to produce zero industrial waste. It is the highest certification level certification awarded to manufacturing companies that recycle all of their industrial waste.

Samsung Display is the first Korean company to receive the Platinum Grade certification from UL. The recent recognition by the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute is another indication of Samsung’s efforts toward a sustainable future.
