It shouldn't be surprising to anyone that Qualcomm is already working on the successor to Snapdragon 888, its latest flagship smartphone SoC. Roland Quandt of Winfuture.de recently revealed some bits about the next-gen Snapdragon chipset. Now he claims that this chipset will be made by Samsung.
If you recall, the Snapdragon 888 is built using Samsung's 5nm EUV fabrication process. Taiwan's TSMC produced Qualcomm's earlier flagships – the Snapdragon 865 in 2019 and the Snapdragon 855 in 2018. There were rumors that the company may switch back to the Taiwanese giant for its next-gen flagship. However, it appears Qualcomm has no such plans and would be sticking with Samsung for at least one more year.
Qualcomm is also reportedly working on a 5G-less variant of the Snapdragon 888. This chipset will lack an integrated 5G modem, so manufacturers could use it in their flagship 4G phones in markets where 5G networks are not available yet. This would enable them to lower the manufacturing cost as they don't have to pay for the 5G modem and required antennas.
Moreover, there could be a "Pro" or "Plus" variant as well, which essentially would be an overclocked version of the existing solution. Samsung will most likely manufacture these two chipsets as well, though we will have to wait for confirmation on that.
According to Quandt, Qualcomm is already testing the Snapdragon 888 successor. The next-gen Snapdragon flagship apparently bears the part number SM8450 (the Snapdragon 888 has the part number SM8350). It is internally codenamed Waipio, likely after the Waipi'o Valley in Hawaii. Qualcomm has been internally naming its products after places in Hawaii for some time now and also often holds its launch events on the island state. The Snapdragon 888 bears the codename Lahaina, another place in Hawaii.
The report claims that Qualcomm is testing the Snapdragon SM8450 with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS memory. What's more interesting is that the company is using a new camera module that bears the codename Leica 1. It's unclear if this has something to do with the German camera company Leica though. But if it does, then a tie-up between Qualcomm and Leica could greatly improve the imaging skills of the next-gen Snapdragon flagship.
Of course, there's still a long way to go before the Snapdragon 888 successor sees the light of day. A lot could change between now and then. It will be interesting to see how things evolve in the near future.
