After a brief overtake by Apple, Samsung once again leads in the market for smartphone sales, thanks largely to the Galaxy S21 series. That's according to recent reports citing market research by Strategy Analytics.
In total, Samsung now dominates the market with a 23.1-percent market share. That is, at least partly, down to the sale of as many as 24-million smartphones in February, largely attributed to the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. Overall, that puts the company back in front of Apple by a margin of 0.9-percent. Apple reportedly shipped just 23-million smartphones in the same timeframe.
Now, reportedly, the gain for Samsung comes as noted above. Specifically, from its newest flagship, the Galaxy S21 series.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 series was able to give it the market-lead in terms of sales mostly, reports indicate, because of when it launched the devices. Typically, Samsung has waited until late February or early March to launch its smartphones in the flagship range. That has historically given Apple, its top competitor, time to recoup sales. Especially since Apple traditionally launches late in the year. Last year, for instance, it launched the iPhone 12 series in October.
By launching earlier, Samsung narrowed the space in which Apple can gain share.
The shift is important for Samsung because Apple has been the most competitive — relatively — in the mobile space. Samsung overtook the fruit-branded tech company more than a year ago. But the lead has necessarily been stable or growing. Last year, Apple took back the top spot with the iPhone 12 for the last quarter.
The lead for Samsung now is narrow. But by jumping out ahead early in 2021, Samsung should have ample room for growth in the lead-up to Apple's next device. Or at the very least, a longer stretch between the launch of the new flagships and Apple's next launch.
