Samsung reportedly is using solar panels in some of its manufacturing plants, Korea Times reports.
Samsung Electronics recently has been very proactive in using eco-friendly technologies. Now, the company has posted a video on its YouTube channel that shows the installation of solar panels in its semiconductor-manufacturing plants. In Yongin, Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek, and Asan, Samsung plants will use these solar panels as a source of energy.
"Across various worksites in Korea, Samsung has installed solar and geothermal facilities for renewable energy production," the company said, "At the company's Suwon, Yongin, and Pyeongtaek campuses, geothermal power-generation facilities have been installed across the campuses' parking lots, buildings, roofs, and new construction sites,"
These panels can produce 2,847 megawatt-hours of renewable energy. Based on Korea Times calculations, a four-person household consumes 350 kilowatt-hours of energy in a month. So Samsung is producing enough energy to provide electricity to 678 households annually.
Samsung noted that it wouldn't use the power generated by these solar panels in production lines, and there is a reason for that. Generating electricity from solar panels is subject to weather conditions. That's why they can't be a constant source of electricity for production lines. The generated power will be consumed at office units.
The Korean company has conducted a long-term plan for using renewable energy in its operations. Dates back to 2018, Samsung has announced that they're working to fully power their worksites in the United States, China, and Europe from renewable energy sources.
The goal was achieved in 2020, and Samsung could reach 100 percent of the renewable energy supply. Samsung noted that they will continue the policies of increasing energy efficiency and minimizing the usage of resources. By then, the goal for the company is to produce high-performing products while using less energy.
Samsung's eco-friendly movements are expanding globally, and the company has an inviolable commitment to it. Moreover, Samsung worksites in India, Brazil, and Mexico will soon utilize renewable energy sources.
Of course, this is not the first eco-friendly movement the Korean company. Samsung has previously formed a partnership with Kvadrat, a Danish textile company, to produce eco-friendly cases for Galaxy S21+ and other smartphones. This plan will allow Samsung to reduce plastic usage in phone cases, packaging, and other processes.
