We’re not too far away from Samsung’s unveiling of its 2021 foldables in the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3. It’s entirely possible that the company could tease the devices, or perhaps a folding tablet, at the company’s Unpacked event this week.
But until these devices are made official, new leaks and rumors are continuing to roll out on a consistent basis. While the Z Fold 2 made leaps and bounds in terms of improvements over the first generation, there are still a few qualms that may put people off from considering it. One of the biggest qualms is the lack of an official IP rating.
When it comes to using a $2,000 smartphone (when not on sale), you don’t want to get caught in a rainstorm and have your fancy and futuristic smartphone rendered useless from some water. A new report from SamMobile suggests that this won’t be as big of an issue with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3.
The sources claim that an official IP rating could arrive alongside these new devices. This would help cut down on the customer’s concern about overall durability, but we wouldn’t hold our breath just yet.
Just about every new flagship smartphone released is equipped with IP68 water and dust resistance rating. However, with the nature of a foldable screen and so many moving parts, it’s likely that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 would see something closer to IP65 or lower.
To go along with the rumored IP rating, we are also expecting to see official S Pen support come to the larger foldable. This is thanks to a newly-designed glass that Samsung will be implemented to further improve its foldable devices, without having users worry about accidental damage. As for the Z Flip 3, we could see a triple-camera setup, a larger cover screen, and smaller bezels. Only time will tell, but expect to see and hear more about these devices in the coming months.
