According to a report by a well-known tipster, the Snapdragon 888 Pro is already in testing, and it’s coming in Q3 2021. This information comes from Digital Chat Station, and was published on Weibo.

The Snapdragon 888 Pro is coming in Q3, it seems, as it’s already in testing

The source claims that Chinese smartphone OEMs are already testing this processor, and that the first batch of phones will arrive in Q3 this year. As expected, the chip is expected to offer a higher clock speed than the Snapdragon 888.

Qualcomm does the same thing every year, pretty much. It releases its main flagship SoC, and then later in the year re-releases it with a higher clock speed. Do note that it seems like only the Cortex-X1, its prime core, will be overclocked.

It remains to be seen what will happen with the GPU, but Qualcomm may not touch it. It’s already clocked quite high, so there may not be a need to push it any further.

The Snapdragon 888 has proven to be an extremely capable processor

The Snapdragon 888 has proven to be quite a capable SoC. Some phones did have heating issues, but it’s possible that was down to optimization from OEMs. Both Samsung and OnePlus managed to resolve such issues.

The situation was not even close to the one that Snapdragon 810 brought to the table. You may not recall, but that SoC was overheating like crazy, and OEMs had to optimize it quite a bit to get it running normally. It couldn’t run at all cylinders.

Qualcomm did learn its lesson from that processor, and basically every flagship SoC that followed it was excellent. The Snapdragon 888 definitely belongs in that category as well, despite some smaller issues that were reported.

Tons of smartphones are fueled by the Snapdragon 888 at the moment. More or less and flagship and premium smartphone in the Android world is using the best Qualcomm has to offer.

The Snapdragon 888 Pro will be used in considerably less premium phones, but that is to be expected. It will not be a next-gen SoC, but it will be a slightly more powerful variant of the Snapdragon 888.
