PlayStation and mobile gaming are generally not two words you would usually say in the same sentence. But Sony looks intent on changing that.
The company recently posted a new job listing looking for a Head Of Mobile for PlayStation Studios. While Sony is not laying out all of its plans for PlayStation in the mobile gaming space, it is sharing at least some details.
Including the types of responsibilities the role requires. PlayStation has had a presence on mobile before. With mobile adaptions of games like Counterspy and others that you can no longer install. As of right now though most of Sony’s mobile apps under the PlayStation brand consist of a few games and a handful of companion apps.
Sony is seemingly looking to move well beyond that.
Over time Sony’s plans for mobile will likely grow to include a lot of stuff. But the big focus is on adapting its most popular franchises for the mobile gaming space.
In the job listing Sony states that the Head Of Mobile will be responsible for leading every aspect of adapting its console and PC games for mobile devices. This includes “expanding the game development of consoles and PC to mobile and live services.” But the big focus is “adapting PlayStation’s biggest franchises for mobile.”
Similar to the way Nintendo has adapted some of its biggest franchises for mobile, Sony appears to be interested in doing the same thing. An even better example of this is Activision-Blizzard. Which plans to bring all of its popular franchises to mobile going forward.
Successes like Call Of Duty: Mobile pushed Activision-Blizzard to start pursuing adapting its other brig franchises for mobile as well. Starting with games like Crash Bandicoot: On The Run!, and the upcoming Diablo: Immortal.
Sony has no doubt seen the lucrative nature of bringing big franchises like this to smartphones. And wants to do the same thing.
The company isn’t discussing any plans right now for specific franchises. But it does clearly state that the job of the Head Of Mobile will be to adapt its biggest franchises for mobile.
The biggest franchises under the PlayStation Studios brand are Uncharted, Gran Turismo, God Of War, The Last Of Us, Ghost Of Tsushima, and a few others. Though God Of War and Uncharted are two of the biggest. So it’s possible that far in the future, Sony plans for these game series’ to make their way to Android and iOS devices in some form.
In fact there’s already an Uncharted mobile game available. Though it likely hasn’t seen the kind of success that Sony is hoping to grab.
