It seems like Samsung isn’t the only manufacturer developing new camera sensors. Sony announced they will release their IMX661 camera sensor soon. PetaPixel translated and reports that Sony's IM661 camera sensor is a 127.68-megapixel sensor. The new sensor will be a “large format” sensor with a global shutter.

Sony's IM661 camera sensor will be aimed at the industrial market. However, it can also be an indication that Sony is capable of delivering a high quality, high megapixel senor for the consumer market.

The new sensor will have a diagonal size of 56.73mm with an active area of 46.2mm x 32.9mm. It will also have a unit cell size of 3.45 μm (H) x 3.45 μm  (V), and it will be what Sony calls its largest global sensor of 127.68mp.

These measurements are close in size to sensors from Pentax and Fujifilm. The Fujifilm GFX 100 in particular is very similar which measures 54.78mm diagonally.

Sony released some other details in regards to the new sensor as well. It is capable of 2.18 frames per second in 10-bit. It will be capable of 19.6 frames in 12- bit, and 12.9 frames in 14-bit.

Sony's IM661 camera sensor brings 128MP while eliminating motion distortion

The sensor will realize wide viewing angles and high resolution shooting by increasing the number of pixels. In addition, it will at the same time enable shooting without motion distortion.

By enabling shooting without motion distortions are the new sensor will eliminate the requirement of cameras for industrial equipment, and improve shooting efficiency.

The sensor uses Sony’s Pregius CMOS global shutter technology which aids in eliminating the motion distortion.

The sensor’s increased pixel will yield an opacity size almost 10 times larger than the common 1.1-type image sensor corresponding to the C mount for industrial equipment. Sony’s original global shutter technology is Pregius.

Pregius enables the capture of motion distortion-free images and enables high-speed readout at a data rate nearly four times faster than conventional products.

Unfortunately, the English press release says that the sensor is designed specifically for industrial use. This means that seeing the new sensor in consumer cameras may not happen. However, the fact that Sony is producing a global shutter with a large sensor is pretty cool since it is uncommon.

Sony has said previously that it has experienced challenges when trying to commercialize large global shutter-equipped sensors. However, it seems like Sony may have found a way around those roadblocks.

Time will tell if Sony decides to bring this to the consumer market. But, hopefully, they do because giving consumers the chance to capture better footage is always a good thing.
