Brave the privacy-focused browser announced they will soon be giving the world a Brave Search engine. Brave announced on March 3 that the company acquired Tailcat which is an open search engine. The acquisition and announcement of the Brave Search engine is now the first privacy-preserving alternative to Google Chrome and Google Search.

This news is pretty major. Especially in this day and age where Google and other tech giants find themselves in legal trouble surrounding privacy. Google Chrome and Google Search rely on tracking their users across sites.

Despite this, they are the most popular in the market. Google Chrome has a 70% share of the browser market, and Search has a whopping 92% of the search engine market.

In the current day and age, most search engines rely on Big Tech companies. However, the Tailcat search engine is built on an independent search index. This index is able to provide users with quality comparable to Google Search, but without invading their privacy.

Tail cat does not collect any IP addresses or personally identifiable information in order to improve search results. The new Brave Search engine will join the privacy-preserving Brave family in order to give consumers peace of mind.

Users are becoming more demanding for user-first alternatives to Big Tech companies. Companies like Google and Facebook collect a lot of private data, and many users are now aware of this. In 2021 Brave Browser now reaches over 25 million monthly active users.

This growth isn’t too surprising. This year alone the privacy-focused messaging platform Signal also saw massive growth in its user base. This came after WhatsApp announced a change to its privacy policies that require sharing data with its parent company Facebook.

The Brave Search engine will protect users privacy while searching

Privacy is quickly becoming the main focus for many users now. Despite how Big Tech companies use this data to “improve” the users' experience, many would rather look for alternatives such as Brave.

For example, the Brave Browser provides stringent protections that other browsers may not. The Brave Search engine is being developed according to the same principles Brave says.

Firstly, Brace Search is private, it does not track or profile users. Secondly, the Brave Search engine is user-first. This means Brave serves the user first, and not the advertising and data industries. Thirdly, the Brave Search engine offers choice.

Fourthly, Brave Search is independent. Fifthly, Brave Search is transparent and will not use secret methods or algorithms to bias results. Sixthly, Brave Search is seamless offering the best-in-class integration between the browser and search. Lastly, Brave Search is open.

Thanks to Brave Search users will now be able to choose a search engine that works in tandem with Brave browser. Brave also offers other privacy-preserving products. The company offers Brave Ads which delivers 3000 private ad campaigns.

There is also Brave Today which is their privacy-preserving newsreader, and a Firewall+VPN service. The company is even working on a privacy-preserving video-conferencing called Brave Together. Now with Brave Search, the company is looking to further expand its app into a super app giving users the control they deserve.
