Android 12 is getting a game mode, which was discovered back during the initial launch of the Android 12 developer preview. At the time the game dashboard had a few different features.
These included the ability to turn on an FPS counter, as well start recording. There was also a large button that allowed for instant access to livestreaming on YouTube. Lastly, the dashboard showed that there was a button for disabling notifications during games, and a button for taking screenshots.
As of the third developer preview, it’s been discovered by XDA’s Mishaal Rahman that the game mode now has a few new features that were added. This suggests that Google is doing what it can to fill this feature out with useful functions. And if Google really wants to cater to mobile gaming enthusiasts, it needs these features. As every gaming phone on the market offers them. Even some non-gaming phones offer them.
When the game mode was discovered in the first developer preview, there were two bigger square-shaped buttons in the dashboard. One of those was the livestream button for YouTube.
So you could easily access it in case you wanted to stream your gameplay. The other button was blank so it was unclear what it would be used for. This button is now one of the new features that popped up with the third developer preview and it turns out it’s a game optimization button.
Tapping this should help to optimize your gameplay by boosting the CPU and GPU for gaming, while likely clearing out RAM use from other apps. How much it actually helps with your phone performance is questionable since the feature isn’t usable yet. But it’s there.
Officially, it looks like enabling the game optimization will give you three different options. One for boosting your frame rate, one for using the game’s defaults, and one that lowers the frame rate to help conserve battery life.
Accessing these features will be fairly easy it seems. As Google has set things up to be available through a floating menu. Phones like the ASUS ROG Phone 5 allow you to toggle these controls by swiping inward from the left edge of the display when a game is running.
Pixel phones on Android 12 however, will let you toggle a floating menu which sort of makes it more accessible. Though that would also mean that it would probably stay open. Even during gameplay. Which could impede visibility a little bit.
